The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is poised to receive a significant boost in its efforts to empower Nigerian youths, thanks to a potential partnership with the World Bank. This collaboration aims to harness the NYSC's 51-year legacy of deploying graduate youths across the country, transforming rural areas and fostering national unity.
Ndiame Diop, the World Bank's Country Director, has expressed enthusiasm for supporting the NYSC's initiatives. He acknowledges the corps members' invaluable contributions to socio-economic development, particularly in reducing infant and maternal mortality rates.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, welcomes the proposed partnership, citing the existing synergy between the NYSC and the World Bank. He highlights the corps members' significant role in various national assignments, showcasing their capacity for impactful service.
Since 2012, the NYSC has been providing vocational training to corps members, empowering them to become entrepreneurs and employers. Over 2 million youths have benefited from this initiative, with approximately 200,000 establishing successful businesses nationwide.
Despite these achievements, Ahmed notes that the NYSC faces challenges in providing adequate infrastructure and funding for its programs. He expresses optimism that the World Bank's partnership will help bridge these gaps, enhancing the NYSC's impact on youth unemployment and national development.
